Anthony Kumpen had a miserable Le Mans, but at least the competition we announced here a week ago was a great success. Over 100 of you entered, to try and win a pair of his driving gloves (used in the 24 Hours) and....we're still trying to catch up with Anthony to find out who won. All of you who entered will receive a signed photograph of the man himself.
27 JUNE: ANTHONY CONFIRMS THAT THE WINNER WAS JAMES CROFTS, FROM THE SWANSEA INSTITUTE AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING COURSE.
Why are we still trying to catch up with him? Well, he's been at Zandvoort this morning, testing a Chrysler-powered single seater, and will race it for Schroder Motorsport in several of the support races to the FIA GT Championship, starting in Hungary at the end of the month. "GT and Sports Prortype racing remains my priority," says Anthony, "but I don't think it hurts to gain extra experience in an open wheel car."
He'll switch straight back to a Viper though - this evening, in the test for the 24 Hours at Spa. "Our non finish at Le Mans was a big disappointment, but we're really focused on Spa, as many of our team partners are Belgian."
The #56 Viper went out of Le Mans when Oreca ran out of spares! Anthony was faced with a spinning Porsche at the very fast right hander at Indianapolis on Saturday evening, spun to avoid a collision, and damaged the front end against the barriers. He limped back to the pits, but the extraodinary list of damage to Vipers meant that there wasn't a Viper airbox available anywhere in Le Mans.
