Brookspeed has today announced that it is quitting the newly formed ISC Sportscar series with immediate effect. This announcement follows weeks of uncertainty and speculation over many ISC organisational, marketing, television, calendar and financial issues.
Brookspeed’s Motorsport Director, Martin Braybrook, explains: "Brookspeed has no alternative but to quit the ISC Sportscar Series. The decision has been taken in the light of increasing uncertainty over almost every aspect of the series. By now we should have been about to compete in our fourth ISC race. However, there has only been one race, and it is our understanding that there are serious question marks over this weekend’s Rockingham event and its promised television coverage.
“The situation is ludicrous. Brookspeed, its backers and sponsors have committed a huge amount of time and money to the ISC Sportscar series, and have done everything in their power to promote the new championship based on information received from the organisers. However we are now faced with a situation where driver prize money has not been paid as due, and team appearance money is in question. More appears to be unresolved with the ISC Sportscar Series than was the case three months ago. The teams have also not yet received written confirmation of their grid slot franchises.
“The team, and I personally, feel very let down by the ISC. We have had to talk with our sponsors and drivers on a daily basis to let them know what we think might be happening with the ISC. From both a commercial and personal viewpoint I can no longer be put in the position of having to make excuses to our team partners and drivers. Brookspeed’s backers stand to lose a considerable amount of money over this debacle.
“I find the whole thing particularly galling as, without doubt, the concept of the ISC Sportscar series is a very good one. Brookspeed has been one of its strongest advocates from day one. With better organisation, communication and commercial skills, the series would have been a major success. Sadly for all concerned, it does not appear to be heading that way.”
Brookspeed is currently talking with its partners and drivers regarding the remainder of the 2001 season. Although a final decision is a day or two away, the initial consensus is that the team will compete in the remaining Privilege British GT Championship and ELMS rounds.
