Kerry Morse explains that after a quick going over in California under the helm of Alwin Springer of Porsche Motorsport, the ex-Mark Donohue all conquering 917/30 will make a run up the hill at Goodwood this weekend. It is seen in California just before departure for the UK.
This particular chassis, 003, is the mount which Donohue used to win the majority of the races in the 1973 Can-Am. The flat 12 cylinder twin turbo easily put out over 1000 horsepower. It was later modified with twin intercoolers and Donohue set the closed course world speed record on the banked circuit at Talledaga.
Although the Porsche museum has trotted out their Sunoco 917/30 (chassis 002) for a number of events, this will be the first time in over 10 years that the actual winning car has been demonstrated to the public.
