28 cars took part in testing yesterday, with the Lister Storm of David Warnock / Mike Jordan fastest overall.
"I’m really happy with what we’ve done today. We’ve got a very good set-up," said Jordan. The Bobby Verdon-Roe / Michael Caine TVR missed most of the first two sessions owing to an alternator problem, but the Cerbera shot up the order to be second fastest. “This is our test session,” said Caine during the third and final session of the day.
Right behind the Cerbera was the Chrysler Viper of Rob Wilson and Tim Harvey, just rebuilt after the accident at Castle Combe. Their day ended with a minor spin into the gravel at Druids. Fourth best in GT was a good run for the NCK Motorsport Marcos LM600 of Geoff Lister / Robin Liddell. “It’s nice to get in something other than a Porsche,” joked Liddell.
The second NCK Marcos LM600 of Chris Maries / Mike Newton missed the test day after an oil pump problem developed and forced team boss Graham Nash to rush back to the team’s Leicestershire base for a replacement. The car should be ready for qualifying on Saturday.
Also hitting dramas was the Quaife R4GTS of Philip Hopkins, which shed its rear bodywork at high speed - an incident reminiscent of Hopkins' accident in the Ultima, which brought a temporary end to his GT racing three years ago. Hopkins brought the car safely back to the pits and the team were working into the night to repair the damage.
In GTO, Kelvin Burt stormed to the top of the times in the final session to edge Short / Barff back to second fastest. "There’s a lot more I’d like to do with the car. It has a lot more potential," said Burt. However, Short and Barff were very pleased to be within seven-tenths of a second of the Porsche, having spent the day using the same tyres they had used for the Castle Combe race. “It’s looking very good,” said Short. “We’ve got consistent pace,” he added.
The second Parr Motorsport entered Porsche 911GT3RS was third fastest in the hands of Matt Turner / Ed Horner, just ahead of the TVR Tuscan R of Steve Hyde / Richard Stanton. Completing the top six GTO times were the Porsches of Terry Rymer / Adam Simmons and Adam Jones / Tony Littlejohn. However, the Porsche of Mark Sumpter / Shaun Balfe was dogged all day by a misfire.
Phil Hindley will partner Ashley Ward in the Tech 9 Racing 911 GT2, as Jonathan Rowland has stood down due to business commitments. Charlie Butler-Henderson and Oli Wilkinson have returned with the CBH Motorsport / Ohana Marcos Mantis GTO.
