There has been some debate on the Racing-Talk Forum regarding TV coverage of the FIA Sportscar Championship. John Mangoletsi clarifies the situation, with a couple of links at the end to take you to listings for the TV channels covering the series:
"The FIA Sportscar Championship's policy has been to develop consistent grids, a quality calendar and to prove that close and exciting racing can regularly be provided by sports prototypes in two classes. We preferred not to take the gamble of using TV to build up the championship, instead we created the sort of racing that attracted teams and constructors on a long term basis and provided a stimulating spectacle that the audience would appreciate.
"As a result we undertook, at the beginning of the season, a unique approach to post producing our televisual highlights of each round of the 2001 season. Just in the way that the series itself has built up step by step since 1997, so too the television coverage has evolved into an innovative and exciting project that fans and sponsors alike enjoy and respect.
"Progressively we are reaching agreements with world leading broadcasters such as RTL, BSkyB, Tele+ and Speedvision. This, we believe, gives a much more positive and direct message to the fans than distributing the programme to a Pan TV network that loses the drama and spontaneity of the race through multi language commentaries and scheduling times.
"Building up a close and long term relationship with broadcasters and stations has been the championship's priority over the last two years. As a result, the championship now tailors the 1 hour dedicated programme of each event to cater for individual needs of the countries that are screening the race.
"This personal touch in editing, which is done in-house, has had the effect of enhancing the good spirit between the championship and the teams and giving personal and team sponsors wider and more intimate coverage.
"We hope this gives sportscar fans an idea of how the championship's Television strategy operates."
