Today marks the 30th anniversary of the death of legendary sportscar driver Pedro Rodriguez. He died in an Interserie race at the Norisring on July 11, 1971. The people of Mexico have never forgotten their hero and today they are honoring his memory with a ceremony in Mexico City.
Rodriguez was a part of the history of sportscar racing at a time when it was transitioning from a 'run what ya brung' status to a professional level, as exemplified by the Ford GT40 and later the Porsche 917 programs run by John Wyer Automotive. Pedro Rodriguez drove them both, winning Le Mans in 1968 in the Ford and Daytona in 1970 in the Porsche.
He was a fiery driver who wanted everyone behind him on the race track. While he was never a series champion, he will always be a champion in life to his people. We remember Pedro Rodriguez as one of the greats.
