The two Audi R8s for Sears Point next week will be using the same engines that powered the cars to the 1-2 at Le Mans. "Because of the rain the distance covered in Le Mans was significantly less than we had anticipated," explains Head of Audi Sport Dr. Ullrich. "We have checked the engines and everything is in top order."
So that's a set of pads in the front, an oil and filter change and a wash and polish, sir?
The direct fuel injection system that was designed to provide an extra lap at Le Mans will obviously be used from now onwards, and although it won't have such a dramatic effect at other circuits, it should allow a more flexible pit strategy. The cars will also carry on using the aerodynamic package developed for Le Mans. "On the track at Sears Point you need mainly downforce," says Dr. Ullrich. "Above all, with our new aerodynamics we improved the drag coefficient without affecting the downforce."
"Last year things didn´t go at all well for us in Sears Point, because we hadn´t found the right set-up," recalls Emanuele Pirro, of that famous occasion when Allan McNish put a lap on him in the first stint. "Still, I like the circuit, even though it´s not without danger."
