DAYTONA TESTING |
AND PORSCHE PLAN TO WIN |
|
September 26/27 sees an official test at Daytona in the build up to next year's Rolex 24 (February 3/4). Between 15 and 20 teams were expected to be present for the test, which is nicely timed to clash with preparations for the PLM. Currently though, only GT3Rs seem likely to switch between the ALMS and the Rolx 24.
Champion Racing are already announcing their intention to go all out to win at Daytona. Bob Wollek and Dorsey Schroeder are kicking off their plans very early with a serious effort at this week's test. They'll be joined by Dirk Mueller next January/February.
"The Rolex 24 At Daytona is so hard because so many things can go wrong, but we have a car that has a chance and winning would be awesome,'' Schroeder said. "You couldn't ask for more in a teammate than Bob Wollek. He's won more Rolex 24s than just about anyone.''
Not quite as many as Hurley Haywood, but a win for Wollek would match Haywood's five victories.
"We are gradually getting a feel and seeing what the problems are in order to achieve enough speed to eventually win the race,'' Wollek said. "To win here requires a lot of work and a lot of teamwork. It requires the right car with the right engines and the right tires and quite a bit of luck.''
"We must make it (the Champion Lola) faster. We must work on the competence and suspension and steering and smooth every detail to make it strong enough to keep running for 24 hours.''
It must be unlikely that a GT car can win again at Daytona, so a good, steady run from Wollek, Schroeder and Mueller might be enough to take the honours. |
