One of the delights of the '99 Privilege GT season was watching Tim Sugden hammering around the UK tracks in the EMKA / GTC McLaren F1 GTR of Steve O'Rourke. The pair only won once that year, but race after race, Sugden was on the limit everywhere, desperately trying to make up ground on the Blue Coral 911 GT1 and the Lister Storm.
A year before and the regular pair plus Bill Auberlen pulled off that amazing fourth place at Le Mans. Now, it seems, the F1 GTR will have one more outing - at Daytona early next year. Assuming that suitable restrictor sizes can be agreed with Grand Am, GTC will run the McLaren at Daytona, in the GTS class. This is an area where the regulations are becoming increasingly blurred, but it's Daytona, a one off race. If the McLaren comes back and pleases the fans (and Steve O'Rourke), why not?
Laurence Pearce has promised to return with a current model Lister Storm, so the question has to be asked - John Greasley, what are you doing early next year? Where's that Blue Coral 911 GT1? Come on, dust off Geoff Lister and Magnus Wallinder, and let's have a Pearce / O'Rourke / Greasley scrap one more time. I know you're reading this, John. |
