Martin Short explains why he's taking his Tuscan R to the Suzuka 1000 Km: "Well, back at Oulton Park, we had a very enthusiastic guy from Suzuka race circuit approach us about the race. He was very impressed with the Cerbera, and subsequently even more impressed with the Tuscan R. He was looking for interesting cars to take part in the Suzuka 1000km race, which is a highly prestigious event. It falls in the same class as Daytona 24 hours, Sebring 12 hours etc. in that it is a world class event."
"It is an ideal way for us to get the Tuscan R onto the world GT stage. As our ultimate goal has always been to take a TVR to Le Mans, we believe that we need to do a 'World' class event as soon as possible. Certainly if the ACO, who organise Le Mans, and 'invite' participants are to be convinced, then we need to show that we are serious about GT racing, and give the car a track record."
Good for you, 'Shorty'. Get out there and show the world what you can do.
"We have no (Privilege) championship hopes as such, and our only goal is to beat the Works Porsches and win races, so the decision for us was much easier, though still took a lot of soul searching."
He has to get the car through Knockhill first, "as the car is being collected by the air freight company directly after the (Scottish) race! It flies to Suzuka, we get there Thursday lunchtime, and prepare for the event which takes place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Directly after the race the car is packaged up by us and returned to Thruxton, on or around the following wednesday. We land back home at 8.30 Monday evening. We then test at Thruxton on the Thursday.....and then race on Saturday and Sunday... so you can imagine that the decision to do this has not been taken lightly.."
"Our main goal is to finish the race. 1000kms, just over 600 miles, will take around 6 to 7 hours. The race finishes in the dark. I/ We are nervous/excited about the prospect of this race. It is all new ground to us obviously. We will be getting a lot of help from Hugh Chamberlain who has run cars at this event for the last 11 years, and has forgotten more about GT racing than most people know. He ran the MG's at Le Mans this year.
"I am extremely grateful to TVR, who are very enthusiastic about our latest venture, and without their support we could not even consider doing this project. Thank you."
Richard Stanton joins the team as third driver, while it appears that a Japanese member of the Racing-Talk Forum is busily rounding up local helpers for the team. It seems that Martin Short's reputation goes before him. Is that a good thing?
