There was much excitement when the famous Aston Martin marque appeared on the provisional entry list for the 2001 Privilege Insurance British GT championship and many fans have been disappointed that the Aston Engineering DB7 GTO car has not appeared on the grid this year.
Aston Engineering Director David Jack explains:
“The car is being developed as an in-house project with no sponsorship and no factory assistance and work on the project therefore has to take its turn amongst our other work.
“There has been a lot of progress on the braking system, handling and reliability of the car however, and I think we’re now at a bit of a crossroads. Either we develop the engine (supercharged V6) or we look towards sourcing a V12 (now possible since the Vantage version of the DB7 is in production). Either way we’d like to run the car in the GT championship in 2002.”
The car, running last weekend in an Aston Martin Owners Club invitation race at Snetterton in the hands of Ronnie Farmer, looked gorgeous, sounded fabulous and would surely be a welcome addition to the GTO ranks next season.
There was more British GT interest in the field too. Ultima regular Edd Sharpe was returning to his Aston racing roots with a drive in a lightweight DB4 (photo). In greasy conditions he stormed to a convincing second place behind a monstrous 650hp Aston V8. With the Ultima now finally showing flashes of form, perhaps he’ll have more opportunity to show off his undoubted talent.
