Next season, Kevin Doran will face the challenge of bringing the all-new Crawford SSC2K to the podium in Grand Am. His first goal will be to win with Max Crawford's new creation. His other, equally important goal is to sell his own creations.
Doran knows road racing cars. He has built them with his name on them, and he has race-prepared other marques as well. Kevin Doran now thinks he has found a way for more people to come into the Grand Am Championship - and win - via the AGT class. He is building an AGT competitor for sale to anyone with a limited budget to race, and an unlimited desire to win.
"I think the AGT class could easily grow in the Grand American series. I think it's a good value for the amount of enjoyment you get for its cost. It is a lot lower cost than an SR car. Our new car will cost about $75,000 - $85,000 depending on the engine package. The maintenance costs won't be that far off from the cost to go racing on Saturday nights. If you ding one up, the repair costs are low. It is something that a lot of people who enjoy road racing can get into. If they enjoy sedans, they may find this is the car for them."
The new sedan is called the JE2. "Our Sports 2000, which was the first product that was 100% Doran engineered and built, is the JE1. Maybe someday there will be a JE 15 or 20 or whatever, but for now, JE2 seems right. It has a Pontiac body shape. GM has always been good to our company, so why not? It's a Grand Prix. It's a nice looking car and I'm sure that, whatever interest the car generates, they would love to have been a part of it".
Doran feels the Grand Am series is the place to put his time and money by building an affordable car that may have a decent size customer base. This feeling is supported by his belief that an AGT car can turn some really hot laps. Irv Hoerr showed as much when he took his AGT Camaro to the finish line first, ahead of a crowded GT field, during the Watkins Glen 18 lap sprint race. "I wouldn't be surprised if an AGT couldn't take an overall win in Grand American. We ran this first car just a few laps and we were not too far off the leaders. With development, I think we could find enough in the set up to be pretty quick. It's still brand new so there is a ton of development time left in it."
