The announcement of the the "National Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.", for July 21 next year, was the first of several changes to the 2001 / 2002 ALMS calendars.
"The upward mobility of the American Le Mans Series has attracted the attention of many of the great racing circuits in North America and the world, and we look forward to telling everyone where we will be racing in 2002 very soon," stated Scott Atherton, President and COO of the Panoz Motor Sports Group.
- But a change to this year's schedule sees the Charlotte race dropped, after input from series stakeholders, including teams, manufacturers and
sponsors. The 2001 ALMS will therefore end with the Audi Petit Le Mans, where Charlotte ticket holders can receive a 'two for one' exchange, or a full Charlotte refund.
- Early next year will see Miami hold an ALMS street race on April 7, on a circuit in the Biscayne Boulevard and Bayfront Park area. The City of Miami has approved a long term 15 year deal with Raceworks, LLC, so the series now has two longterm deals for city-based events. Miami has a sportscar racing heritage of course, regularly attracting large crowds in the eighties and early nineties. The Miami American Le Mans Series race will be televised by CBS.
Scott Atherton is looking ahead to next year with an emphasis on a "true endurance sports car racing format" with a return to "classic sports car racing venues as well as strategic major market temporary circuits." Charlotte clearly doesn't fit either of these criteria, but it remains to be seen where Sears Point does or doesn't fit in.
