Remember the Gunnar Lola Porsche, and the team's attempts to run at Sebring? They're now readying it for the Petit Le Mans.
It had been rejected at Sebring for a variety of reasons, but the hope is that all that has been remedied. Kevin Jeannette is exchanging photos with the ACO / ALMS to forestall any concerns. They will use a two-valve per cylinder, two-liter turbo at Road Atlanta. Joining Gunnar J. at the wheel will be team regular Wayne Jackson, with the great Porsche veteran, Hurley Haywood, possibly on the driving strength as well.
At Watkins Glen recently, the Gunnar Racing team ran a new / old 996 GT3R (above). The car is a re-tubbed GT3R that was run and crashed by the Colucci-managed Nygmatech team at the 2000 Daytona 24 Hours. The Gunnar Racing team recently added on 2002 style suspension points on the car, a move that perplexed the Grand-Am scrutineers as they judged the new parts to be non-standard. As a result, the car was bumped into GTS, guaranteeing it a podium spot in the poorly subscribed class.
Hotshoe Gunnar Jeannette was more concerned with pacing against the GT Porsches and he managed to closely follow the ostensibly quicker Randy Pobst. The Fordahl Motorsports entry began to leak fluid and eventually spun into oblivion, allowing Jeannette and co-driver Stephen Bartkiw to set off after new prey. The car will again be seen at the Daytona GARRA finale, where it will be decked out in Van Halen trim.
