The Florida based, French built, entrant of the Norma-BMW are hoping to be back in action for the Daytona Finale of the Grand-Am season. Patrice Roussel's off-course excursion during practive at Trois Rivieres damaged the unique clutch. The Sezio Racing team gave up trying to fabricate a replacement and have opted to use a more reliable Tilton version back in Florida.
There they will again run the Mader built BMW motor, but the bodywork will be different. The new front splitter and rear wing assemblies are a precursor for a pair of all new M2002 models that they will premier at the November test sessions for next year's 24 Hours. The new design will feature a much more sculpted look, including an Audi-like airbox arrangement. Power will come from a Kinetics Ford, driving through a factory-supported Hewland. They will also be testing a new compound of Goodyears during the September race.
They are very much looking forward to scuttling the troublesome BMW, which is no longer under development and is twice as expensive as the more powerful American V-8. Even with the older motor, they have been narrowing the lap time gap to the benchmark Dyson team and hope to continue in this vein during the autumn and winter.
The team will again race with their familiar no. 78 next season, adding no. 87 as well. They will reverse the colors on one car; dark blue front to light blue rear. In addition to regular drivers Roussel and Edouard Sezionale, it is expected that John Mirro and Georges Forgeois will join them - and perhaps a new (UK) name. After Daytona they will aim for Sebring, with a view toward acceptance by the ACO. Success in the ALMS and at Le Mans is taking center stage over merely another data gathering season in the Grand-Am.
The correct model designation for the new car is M2000-02.
