Throughout contemporary history, it has been cartoonists on the editorial pages that have accurately captured the situation and pulse of the moment.
For years, Jim Bamber has made the trek out his back door in Surrey to his small hand built wooden studio and created some of motorsport's most memorable moments. I had sent him a note upon returning from the ALMS race at Laguna Seca and this was followed by an exchange regarding the horrific events of Sept 11. While such things as motorsport events are really insignificant in times of tragedy, people eventually try to return to their lives.
The United States Grand Prix held at Indianapolis is one of the events that a great many people are looking forward to. There had been a suggestion that the race be cancelled, perhaps it should and perhaps it shouldn't.
This drawing arrived yesterday, along with words from Jim expressing his sorrow - but at the same time through his artistry saying that we can get on with it. After having endured the last few days of screaming media rhetoric, Bamber has delivered a moment of hope expressing both integrity and dignity.
As a friend and an American, I thank him.
