The LM3000 and the Harrier were both making their race debut at Donington, while the Ascari should have been starting its second SRWC race, its third in total after running in the ALMS at the Nurburgring. Of the three, the LM3000 was the only one to take the start after the other two were abandoned at Coppice on the pace lap.
Mike Millard has had his problems with the LM3000, finally abandoning the Ford powerplant and fitting a Nissan. Advanced Engine Research provided fine support at Donington - as did Ian Flux.
Flexing of the floor was a problem in free practice, resulting in no laps for the car owner and only single exploratory laps for Flux. Nevertheless, Flux completed an out lap, one flying lap and an in lap in Qualifying to place the car fifth on the Lights grid, less than two seconds slower than Dino Morelli on pole.
He was running eighth in class - ahead of the eventual class winner - in the early laps (with a new, softer set-up) before receiving a puncture, the car thereafter running trouble free until the left rear hub failed, probably a result of all the vibration on Saturday.
The softer springs were a step in the right direction, and more races are planned. |
