Last Week`s Daytona Test |
The Few, The Proud |
|
Janos Wimpffen has been piecing together what happened at last week's test at Daytona.
A total of 13 Grand-Am cars took to the track during last week’s two-day test session. In addition, a slightly higher number of Cup series entrants participated in their own sessions. As mentioned before, it was very much a cobbled together affair with the cars having been in place prior to the onslaught of disaster, while a smattering of drivers and crews were available.
Quickest of the lot by a wide margin was Andy Wallace in the Champion Lola-Porsche at 1:47.586. The time was set during the Wednesday afternoon period, the only time that most of the others took to the track. Wallace was the only one to run in the morning, and that was only for a brief warm-up. The ex-Intersport Riley & Scott was next at 1:51.669, with the only other SRP car present, Miracle’s R & S at 1:54.259.
Three SRPII cars ran, one each from PorscheHaus (1:54.552) and Archangel (1:56.445), as well as the relatively new Southern Comfort Pilbeam. No GTS cars were ready, while four from the GT group circulated, including both of the Orbit cars. The no. 43 was quickest at 1:58.761. The others were the ex-Job GT3R newly acquired by Speedsource and the Pobst / Hiskey Porsche. Finally, there were three AGTs in action, with the Flis Motorsports Corvette quickest at 2:00.701. The Ron Fariss Camaro and Jim King Oldsmobile were the others. The aforementioned Cutlass and the Pilbeam were the lone cars to run on the second day, on which the general gloom was compounded by the arrival of tropical storm Gabriele.
All this made the test session little more than a brief academic exercise. There is still no word on when and if the Daytona Finale race will be re-scheduled.
Yes there is. Just received:
Grand American Road Racing Association President Roger Edmondson announced today that the Rolex Sports Car Series and Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series will join Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) at Daytona International Speedway for an exciting weekend of racing in the Manheim's Daytona Auto Auction Presents The Brumos Continental Historics, Nov. 1-3.
