Haines In Spain |
A Series Of Misfortunes |
|
Mike Haines has to believe his run of bad luck is now at an end, after last weekend's round of the Spanish GT Championship at Alabacete.
With funding having failed to materialise by Thursday evening from driver Juan Signes, phone calls to the UK saw regular driver Chris Ellis drafted in to 'Hot Foot' it over to Spain next morning, for Friday testing.
Then their new Lotus Esprit GT2, despite having performed faultlessly in its shakedown test, gave the team a lot of aggravation and plenty of 'midnight oil' to burn, when fault after fault appeared with its brand new wiring harness.
Saturday evening's race saw the car driven by Chris retiring with a misfire. Sunday's race was started by Mario Guarnieri, but finished with the car damaged in a first corner accident. NOT a good weekend!
To compound the misery, the team's transporter suffered a breakdown in Spain during the return journey, then the bit that really restored Haines's faith came at the airport on the way back, some lowlife in baggage handling had rifled cash from one of the cases. The team appear to be taking a few more than their own share of knocks at present.
But in racing, you have to believe that better luck is just around the corner. "We are working flat out to have both cars ready for the Privilege Silverstone Night Race, but we do need drivers for the second car," explains Mike Haines.
