The press release reads as follows:
Officials announced today that the Le Mans Series Race of Champions event that had been scheduled for Nov. 9-11 at the Sepang international Circuit in Malaysia has been postponed due to international concerns following the tragic events which recently took place in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.
The event at Kuala Lumpur's Sepang International Circuit will now be staged early in 2002 - with a specific date to be finalized after consultation with the competing American and European Le Mans Series teams and key stakeholders. The new date announcement will be made on Oct. 6 at next week's Audi presents Petit Le Mans event at Road Atlanta.
The six-hour sports car endurance race in Malaysia will bring together drivers and teams from both the American and European Le Mans Series at the Sepang International Circuit, considered to be one of the world's most beautiful and modern auto racing facilities.
"The general uncertainty of the world's political situation as a result of the events of September 11 has caused everyone involved in this event to acknowledge the circumstances we are faced with and act accordingly," said Scott Atherton, President and COO of the Panoz Motor Sports Group.
"We regret having to postpone the event, but feel it is the prudent action to take," he said. "After consultation with our teams and key stakeholders and sponsors, we will determine the most suitable date and make the announcement at Petit Le Mans."
Local event organizers Automobili Motorsports remain committed to bringing the stars and the cars from the American and European Le Mans Series championships to Malaysia.
"In light of what has happened, we understand the situation and concerns of the foreign participants about international travel," said Automobili Motorsports Chairman, Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib.
"We feel at this time that it is in the best interest of everyone to postpone the event to a new date," he said. "The organizing team at Automobili has a great many friends in the United States and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
Taib said that all tickets and hospitality facilities that had been purchased for the event would be honored on the rescheduled date.
"We remain committed to bringing world-class sports car action to Malaysia," he said. "All ticket holders will be able to use their tickets at the new dates."
Atherton indicated that the postponement of the Malaysian event would not affect the Oct. 6 running of Audi presents Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, the final round of the American Le Mans Series championship for 2001.
"We look forward to holding a great event at Road Atlanta, and kicking off the new year with a spectacular event in Malaysia," he said.
