Riley & Scott’s VP, Bill Riley, has announced that the company will campaign a MKlll C for Jim Matthews in "the 2002 endurance classics". The car will be delivered this month, with testing due to start next month.
“Jim has been a great customer in the past, and we’re very pleased he’s chosen Riley & Scott as a partner in his return to prototypes”, Bill Riley said. Matthews' last prototype drive was as one of the two founders of the Johansson-Matthews Reynard team last year, but he's been racing in Trans-Am during 2001.
“We were able to retain the core of our racing group and the company is thrilled to return to racing what we build,” added Bill Riley. He had as difficult a 2000 season as did Matthews.
Engines for the Mklll C will be supplied by Elan Power Products. A driving partner or partners for Matthews are still under review, but the car will be engineered by Bill and Bob Riley.
“I’m very pleased I was able to convince Bill and Bob to re-create a team to run the car," said Matthews. "Our first race will be the 2002 Rolex 24 at Daytona, following a thorough testing and development program in the fall”. Matthews is likely to have a very different Daytona from that he experienced in early 2000, when the Reynard was so new and troubled. It did at least finish that event, but the Mklll C should start out 2002 as a very much tried and tested machine.
The Riley & Scott Mk III C has already mark its mark in ALMS events with Dyson Racing. Surely one of these two teams will bring a car home at the front in the next Rolex 24?
Regarding any Le Mans effort from the Riley & Scott company (not necessarily in this Jim Matthews guise), Bruce Kempton would only say, "the intention is to include that event in the schedule, but plans are not yet firm either way."
