Christine Hyde, press director for Grand-Am, was scouting her friendly rivals at Road Atlanta. Following announcement of the 2002 ALMS calendar, she made some comments about the selection of venues for her series. Not all the dates have been set, but the jist is that the season begins as usual with the Daytona 24, possibly returning to northern Florida either in July or at the end of the season. Watkins Glen will again have two dates, with other returning races being the “rovals” of Homestead and Phoenix. A new one of this genre will be the Fontana Speedway in California. Grand-Am will again play second fiddle at one of the Watkins Glen races to NASCAR, and then will back IRL in Miami and Fontana.
While it is nice that they have moved forward with plans for 2002, the tenor towards being a support series, concentrating on rovals, and loss of key events to ALMS leads to a continued diminution of the championship. On the plus side, they expect to include Virginia International Raceway next year. While largely a club circuit, it will bring the venue back into limelight for the first time in nearly thirty years. It also the home of one of the stalwart GARRA teams, G & W Motorsport. There is as yet no word concerning a Grand-Am event at Lime Rock.
