After a one-year absence, Pirelli Tires will be back racing in the ALMS Series in 2002. It is also confirmed that they will be developing a tire for use on the works Saleen S-7R effort.
The Italian Tire Company will come back to the ALMS after completing a renovation of its production facility in Turin. This time away also allows the company to improve the performance of their tire, which is something that they were not happy with in the 2000 season (Skea Porsches, above).
In the one-year absence from the ALMS, Pirelli has kept busy. Besides the work on the production facility, they have been supplying spec tires for the Ferrari Challenge - plus tires to Ford and Subaru in the World Rally Championship, along with also supplying tires in the FIA Sportscar Championship, where they have had seven podium finishes, including three wins.
The company have also spent a lot of time developing tires for the FIA GT Championship this year, and the results of the testing work with the Art team Porsche at Mugello, Imola and Vallelunga have seen a succession of good finishes for the Moccia and Babini this year.
The current plan is to supply tires for only the GTS and GT classes in next year's ALMS. Knowledge gained from this will assist Pirelli in their goal of overall victory at Le Mans by 2004.
Development will start soon on tires for the Saleen. While only the factory effort, which is expected to run Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans and the Petit Le Mans is definitely with these tires, privateer teams will be encouraged to run them. When the Saleen Team is not running, the factory drivers (Champion Terry Borcheller, Oliver Gavin and Ron Johnson) will be on loan to the many privateer efforts that will be running the S-7R. Pirelli is the OEM tire supplier for all street Saleen cars.
Pirelli has always had strong ties to Ferrari, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the recently debuted Ferrari GT and GTS cars also shod with the Italian rubber next season.
