Marc Laffeas caught up with Hugues de Chaunac at the ACO's meeting in Paris.
M. de Chaunac is very confident about the evolution of his Le Mans program for the 2001 Dallara / Chrysler prototype. Dallara will be Oreca's exclusive partner for the new Chryler protoype program, the two organisations working together to speed up development. For example, Oreca can use the wind tunnel and other facilities at Dallara.
de Chaunac said that the new bodywork was very beautiful, and is a single roll hoop design. The first laps are scheduled at the end of the year or at the beginning of January, and everything seems on course to meet this target. The first race should be Sebring with probably two cars. Other ALMS and ELMS races are likely to be entered, but the main target is Le Mans, with three cars.
Audi is their reference point, and all the parts of the car will be improved to be ahead of the Audi on pace and efficiency. Hugues thinks Audi were not pushed hard this year and that the speed of the 2001 race will increase over the 2000 event. The Mopar engine is being developed for better consumption and more power. Michelin will still provide the tyres for next year.
About the Viper program, it seems that everything will be decided during the next two weeks, but there is unlikely to be a whole championship involvement next year. Perhaps just few races, such as Sebring ? Petit Le Mans? Le Mans? No decision yet. What is sure is that Daytona will not be featured, as they can't do better than an overall victory.
The evolution of the Viper is not scheduled for competition before 2002. |
