Panoz Motor Sports stars David Brabham and Jan Magnussen are eagerly awaiting the start of the 2002 American Le Mans Series after completing a three-day test at Sebring this week.
The venue for the opening round of the 2002 championship, the historic Florida circuit will host the 50th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, presented by Dodge from March 14-15.
Australian Brabham and his Danish team-mate Magnussen were joined in the three day test by their new U.S. team-mates former CART ace, Bryan Herta; reigning AMLS GTS champion Terry Borcheller and young test driver Gunnar Jeannette.
Hosted by Michelin, Panoz were able to evaluate tyre options for the forthcoming ALMS season.
"The test went remarkably well and the car ran very strong across the entire three days," Brabham said. "Michelin have again done a fantastic job and we found a couple of tyre options which worked really well on our car. We were able to get plenty of miles on the rubber and they stayed very consistent. I really am very pleased with the way everything went."
Brabham and Magnussen's new team-mates also made a welcome addition to the Braselton, Georgia-based squad.
"All the guys worked together exceptionally well and I think we should have two very strong cars out there in 2002," Brabham said. "Driving these cars is a new experience for Bryan, Terry and Gunnar and all of them did exceptionally well. Jan and I will not have things our own way this season I am sure Bryan and Terry will be very competitive and will push us hard . . . and that is the way it should be."
The Panoz squad has been working hard on new developments for the LMP-1 which are hoped to be introduced in the near future. Magnussen is looking forward to further improvement as the team prepares for the season opener.
"The car was very strong at Sebring, but we still have a lot more to come," Magnussen said.
"The guys have been spending a lot of time on aerodynamic improvements which we are hoping to test in the near future. Our car was competitive last year, but you can't afford to rest on your laurels everybody is very motivated to make further improvements and really give Audi a real run for the championship."
