Hagestad Racing has announced its return for a third season to the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Touring Car Championship with three Volkswagen Jettas. Drew Hagestad (No. 95) will spearhead a three-car Jetta squad, along with 1999 Rookie of the Year Kevin Schrantz (No. 97) and Rob Hines (No. 98), who finished 11th in points last season.
Schrantz, 32, of Boulder, Colo., has 22 Speed Touring Car starts under his belt as he enters his fourth World Challenge season. After scoring his win at Lime Rock Park in 2000, he looks to build on six top-five and 15 top-10 finishes that have been amassed in a short career. He's no stranger to the podium and after testing the VW at Mosport last year, he feels very good about 2002.
"This Volkswagen is one bad-ass car," said Schrantz. "When I drove it last May I just fell in love with it right from the start. I've known the guys on this team for a while and we hope to unite in order to bring a new manufacturer to the podium.
"Our main goal this season will be to utilize the experience and depth we have, and get these three Jettas up front."
Also, joining the team is 2001 Rookie of the Year Runner-Up Rob Hines, of Arlington, Va. Hines, 30, ran his first full season in Speed Touring Car last year and finished a season-best seventh at Portland. Hines began his racing career in 1996 and in 1999 won the Touring 2 class at the SCCA Valvoline Runoffs in a Chevrolet Camaro.
"I'm really excited to be running with Hagestad Racing this season," said Hines. "The Volkswagen Jetta provides us a great platform with which we can run up front in the Speed Touring Car series."
Completing the three-car Jetta assault will be Drew Hagestad, of Irving, Texas. Hagestad, 32, will be starting his third Speed Touring Car campaign. He ran nine races in a VW Jetta last season with a season-best 11th at Road Atlanta and finished 19th in points in his second World Challenge season.
"I think this team will excel in that all three drivers are on the same page," said Hagestad. "In addition, the Jettas are much stronger than most people think. We are making a conscious effort to let the fans know that VW can be represented just as well as BMW or Acura on the Speed Touring Car podium."
