The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has joined with the Motor Sports Medicine Group to create the IMSA Sports Medicine Program, presented by Physiotherapy Associates, for all events on the American Le Mans Series in 2002. IMSA is the sanctioning body for the sports car endurance racing series.
The IMSA Sports Medicine Program is an on-site injury treatment, rehabilitation and education service plan that will be available to all participants in American Le Mans Series events. It will be an extension of the established medical program at events and is a comprehensive injury prevention program as well as a motorsport-specific rehabilitation and treatment program that is of the same caliber of sports medicine health care provided to elite athletes in other professional sports.
Housed in a mobile sports medicine center that will be parked in the paddock at all events, the program will contain the equipment necessary for the administration and execution of a sport-specific health care program. The unique tractor-van vehicle is the equivalent of the training rooms and sports medicine facilities provided by other major league sports.
The on-site staff for the IMSA Sports Medicine Program will consist of an orthopedic surgeon, athletic trainer, operations manager and administrative director as well as a locally-based orthopedic surgeon and athletic trainer and/or physical therapist. The mobile facility will also house the personnel and equipment of the IMSA emergency medical staff headed by Dr. Ron Krome.
"We are pleased to welcome the Motor Sports Medicine Group to American Le Mans Series racing," said Dennis Huth, President of IMSA. "This new program will supplement the outstanding health care that Dr. Krome and his group have provided since the inception of the series and will be an outstanding service for our participants."
"The American Le Mans Series is a vibrant, growing series, and we're happy to be a part of it," said Don Andrews, Executive Director of Motor Sports Medicine Group. "We look forward to making many new friends and helping these great athletes perform at their best."
The IMSA Sports Medicine Program is funded by Physiotherapy Associates of Memphis, Tenn., a corporate sponsor that is committed to the sport of auto racing and quality medical care. The service is provided to participants without fees.
