No decision has yet been made, but Aston Martin are strongly rumoured to be heading back to Le Mans - with a GTS version of the V12 Vanquish, due for a launch on the road later this year.
Recent efforts at the classic 24 hours included a privateer DB7 that didn't make it through Pre-Qualifying in 1995, and more significantly, the 1989 AMR1s, one of which finished 11th. But that project was canned when Aston Martin were taken over by Ford, who couldn't see the logic of Jaguar and Aston Martin racing Group C cars.
There was also the Robin Hamilton Aston Martin V8 that lumbered home in 1977, and other Aston V8 powered chassis such as the Nimrods of the early eighties and the John Surtees Lola T70s.
Put that collection together and the conclusion ought to be that it's time for another effort. Graham Humphreys (left) has been employed to look at the suitability of the six litre Vanquish - and 42 years after the company's only overall win, they could be back, taking on the Corvettes. Less than 11 months to go.......but Humphreys did design the 1999 Le Mans winner. Or will they wait until a mid-engined machine is ready to go? |
