Alfa & Volvo not happy with the current transmission |
BMW are listening but do they agree? |
|
Alfa and Volvo are at logger heads with the FIA & BMW over the regulations regarding the gearboxes the teams are allowed to use under the current Super 2000 rules.
The regulations state that the race cars must be fitted with a non sequential 5 speed gearbox contained within the original road car casing, as used in the Super Production regulations. The Alfa Romeo teams has been suffering from continual gearbox failures during testing and they claim that this is due to the current regulation. The Alfa 156 used in the Super Production format suffered from similar problems due to the gearbox casing continually cracking under the extra stress that motorsport induces.
BMW are in favour of retaining the regulations as packaging is not a problem with the rear drive cars though both Alfa and Volvo are keen to use ready made racing transmissions as used in the British Touring Cars.
