Team Bentley has named Guy Smith as its reserve driver for this year's Le Mans. He will also be the team's chief test-driver.
Guy was an integral part of the 2001 Le Mans effort, sharing the number 7 car with Martin Brundle and Stephane Ortelli and showed great speed and commitment not just during the race but also during the test programme. The Bentley EXP Speed 8 entered for this year's 24-hours will be crewed by the drivers who took the number 8 car to third place last year. Guy has been retained not only as back-up for this year's race, but to play a key role in a very demanding test programme that extends up to and beyond this year's race.
Team Manager John Wickham said: 'Guy's appointment as our test and reserve driver was natural for us. He had great results at both Daytona (2nd) and Sebring (3rd) this year, he knows the team well and has the total confidence in the engineers. He has shown again and again that he has all the speed and maturity vital for the job and is already proving as great an asset to the team in 2002 as he was last year.'
Guy was clearly delighted to be back on the squad, choosing to give up a competitive drive at Le Mans with another team to be with Team Bentley again. 'For me it's just great to be working with the team once more,' he said. 'I've already driven the new car a long way and it's showing great promise in all areas.
And, of course, the future looks more exciting still. Hopefully this year I'll be able to play my part in another successful Le Mans for Team Bentley even if I'm not actually driving in the race itself.'
