Motorsport fans will get a chance to see Volvos racing again for the first time in the UK since 1998, when two Volvo S60s take on eight BMWs and seven Alfa Romeos, amongst other competitors, at the next European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) race at Silverstone on Sunday, 5 May.
Many will remember Volvo’s legendary success on the race track during the 1980s and 1990s with its 240, 850 and S40 models, and will welcome Volvo’s return to international motorsport. The two S60s, prepared by Prodrive, will be driven by the Swedish ace Rickard Rydell, who first raced with Volvos in the British Touring Car Championships in 1994 and won the series in 1998, and young British driver, James Hanson, 24, who had his first touring car season with BMW in 2001.
The S60s raced hard and gained fourth place in both races at their first outing of the ETCC season on 21 April at Magny Cours in France and, after the meeting at Silverstone, will continue on a European tour via Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Belgium and Italy before returning to the UK at Donington Park on 6 October.
