After an absence of seven years, Alfa Romeo (UK) has rejoined top flight motorsport, and is backing the efforts of ‘young gun’ 20-year-old Tom Ferrier in the 2002 FIA European Touring Car Championship (ETCC), which comes to Silverstone on 4/5 May.
Tom, who is the youngest driver competing in the championship and obvious candidate for the new Littlewoods catalogue, managed to qualified fifth fastest in his Dart Racing IP Alfa 156 GTA at the opening round in France on 20 April, is excited about the forthcoming season. "I am really looking forward to working with Alfa Romeo in this championship," he says. "I aim to prove that with my dedication and the fine engineering of Alfa Romeo, we can achieve some great results together."
This is only the second time in over 50 years that a British driver has lined up at Silverstone in a fourth ‘works’ Alfa Romeo. The first time was in 1950 when Reg Parnell raced with the legendary trio: Farina, Fagioli and Fangio in the Grand Prix at Silverstone. On 5 May, Ferrier lines up alongside Giovanardi, Larini and Bernardoni.
Dart Racing IP of Milan, which prepares and runs Tom’s Union Flag-bedecked car, has a distinguished racing history and possesses engineering experience second to none in modern day Touring Cars.
