An eventful qualifying session for Panasonic Batteries Team JLR. With both Alex Danielsson and Christian England returning to the pits almost as soon as the session had started the heat was on for the mechanics.
A miss-matched gear forced Alx in to the pits, but Alxs' race engineer Arron Skelly did a blinding job to strip the gearbox in the pit lane, change 4th gear and get him back out to qualify in a mere 18 minutes.
"I knew something wasn't right as soon as I went out to qualify" said a perplexed Alx. "But I was back out with 5 minutes left of the session and although there was no-one about to get a tow off, I managed to get one good lap in before the end of the session. Third row of the grid will do for starters but I felt I could go a lot quicker so I'm looking forward to the race."
Christian called in, concerned about a noise the car was producing under braking in to Church but a thorough check-over by his mechanic Ken Clayton proved it was simply brake pad knock-off from running over the kerbs and Christian soon returned to the track. Down in eighth place as a result of sitting out several laps, Christian soon leapt up to fourth, before a trip across the grass put him back in the pits.
"I didn't manage to get a tow, which makes a big difference with the long fast straights here, but my last lap was looking great through the first three sections, before I went off at Church - flat out!" grinned a rueful Christian England.
Tom Kimber-Smith made only one short visit to the pits and progressed up the grid to seventh until the dying moments of the session when he was shunted down to eleventh.
"The car felt good said the seventeen-year old, "but I just didn't get on the pace quickly enough. I'm frustrated but really looking forward to the race all the same."
