Paul Robe at Parr Motorsport is “looking forward to a very good 2001 season,” now that his Parr Motorsport operation has been confirmed as the nominated team to run the 2001 Motor Sport Programme for Porsche Cars Great Britain. Parr Motorsport will run a GT3 Cup car in the Porsche Cup Championship, alongside two Porsche GT3 RS chassis in the Privilege GT Championship.
Nominated drivers so far are the 1998 and 1999 British Ladies Rally Champion, Barbara Armstrong, in the Porsche Cup entry, with Richard Lyons and Marino Franchitti as the ‘junior’ pair in one of the GT3RSs. Drivers in the ‘senior’ GT3RS will be named later, but they are likely to be British drivers.
With the conclusion of Parr’s connection with Vipers, they are free to return to their Porsche roots for the new season. Highlight of the Parr CV so far was second place in GT2 at Le Mans in 1996, when they ran a pair of 911s under the combined Parr / New Hardware / Bill Farmer banner. Stephane Ortelli and Andy Pilgrim were on the strength then (4th in class), but it was the Farmer / Murphy / Nearn car that finished second.
The last-named is just the sort of talent who might be in line for one of the ‘senior’ positions. Franchitti and Lyons are lacking in GT experience – but not in pace. Dario’s younger brother is a former Karting Champion and Formula Ford pole-setter, while Lyons is an Irish Karting Champion and runner-up in the 1999 Palmer Audi series. The Irishman has already pedalled a Tampolli at great speed in the SRWC, and has some GT experience. Barbara Armstrong, from Dumfries (a good sign), is the 1998 / 1999 British Ladies Rally Champion. Her presence proves that Porsches aren’t just men’s ‘toys’.
The three new cars are expected to be delivered early in the new year. Paul Robe can’t wait to get started.
