Five out of Five |
for Westley Barber |

Westley Barber looks more and more like a Formula Ford Zetec Champion even at this early stage of the motor racing season: victory in both the latest rounds of the championship at the Thruxton circuit over the May bank holiday weekend mean it is now five wins from five races for the Saffron Walden racer.
And says the 20-year-old: "I want to make it six in a row at Silverstone in a month's time. Who knows, we have two races there so it could even be seven. I won five in a row when I won the Formula Renault Campus title in France a few years ago so the signs are looking good."
It was by a massive 7/10ths of second that Barber secured his fourth consecutive pole position of the season for the first of the two races, held on the Sunday, averaging an amazing 101.45mph around the Hampshire circuit - the fastest on the calendar.
From there he became embroiled in a high-speed battle for supremacy with one of his Duckhams Van Diemen team-mates, Mike Conway, who briefly snatched away the lead. Barber, though, was more than equal to the challenge, slipstreaming back past Conway at 145mph before the packed grandstands to regain the lead. From there he was never headed as he raced to his fourth win of the year.
Monday's race was then a virtual repeat of Sunday's. Barber once again took up pole position on the grid, but Conway got ahead of him at the start. By the end of the first lap, however, Barber was back in front and heading for victory number five.
"I did the same as on Sunday - got in Conway's slipstream, sucked up to him and then moved past before the chicane. It's a classic move at Thruxton but I then pushed like crazy to make sure I got far enough ahead so he couldn't do the same to me next time around. Once I'd broken his 'tow' I was able to comfortably build a cushion of about three seconds before the end. Later I found out I'd had a bit of luck - the team discovered a slight crack in my car's gearbox but fortunately it all held together. A big thanks again to the Van Diemen team - they really gave me the perfect car so I just made sure I made the most of it. Roll on Silverstone - I can't wait!" |
