Earnhardts Testing At Sebring |
And The GA Class Names Change |
|
The Corvette C5-Rs are at Sebring from November 21 for three days of testing prior to the 39th Rolex 24. Dale Earnhardts Sr. and Jr. had their first try in a Corvette; they’re down to race at Daytona with Andy Pilgrim.
Dale Sr. praised Ron Fellows for the way the Canadian adapts to a Winston Cup car on a road circuit, and suggested that it wouldn’t be as easy for he and his son to switch to the GTS entry. The C5-R is very much lighter and better under braking than the runner up (and seven times Champion) in the Winston Cup is used to. Dale Jr. had more laps, but his father was quicker. The only known problem was an oil leak from the Emco transaxle.
There was an interesting mix of class names in the lap time charts at the recent Daytona Tests. Cars that started out as GTOs were GTSs by the end of the tests. But as of November 16, the Corvettes and others are classed as GTSs, while the GTUs are now known as GTs. While the AGTs keep the same name, the prototypes change, as follows;
Sportsracers (SR) are henceforth known as Sports Racing Prototypes (SRPs)Sportsracer lls (SRll) are henceforth known as Sports Racing Prototypes ll (SRPlls).
Whether this will make it any clearer for the fans remains to be seen. It does take the Grand-Am prototypes further away from the categories competing in the SportsRacing World Cup (soon to be known as the FIA Sportscar Championship). Whether many European prototypes race at Daytona is yet to become clear. |
