Maxwell Captures Pole at VIR
Scott Maxwell captured the pole for today's three-hour Grand-Am Cup race at Virginia International Raceway. Maxwell, racing the Doncaster Racing No76 Porsche GT3 Cup, clocked a 1:35.132 lap at 85.145 mph on VIR's 2.25-mile North Course. He bested Devon Powell, in the Powell Motorsports No11 Corvette, by 1.672 seconds.
A rivalry has developed between the Doncaster and Powell teams this season. Powell holds a narrow five-point margin over Doncaster in both the team and driver points standings. Doncaster passed Powell in the final laps of the Grand Sport 250 to capture the win last weekend at Watkins Glen International. The pair will once again fight for the lead as they race into turn one this afternoon when the green flag falls.
Sylvain Tremblay clocked the quickest lap in the Grand Sport II class in the SpeedSource No 63 Porsche 911. His 1:40.296 lap at 80.761 mph edged out Benoit Theetge by 0.301 seconds for the GS II pole. Theetge clocked a 1:40.597 lap in the Theetge Motorsports No73 Acura NSX.
Jonathan Bomarito piloted the No34 BMW Z3 of Villaconn International to a 1:42.202 lap time a 79.255 mph to lead the Sports Touring I class. Bomarito is currently tied with his co-driver, Beau Buisson, for the points lead in the ST I driver standings.
Villaconn's second car, the No36 BMW Z3, qualified second in the class with Don Salama behind the wheel. He recorded a 1:43.296 lap at 78.415 mph, 1.094 seconds behind his pole-winning teammate.
Wayne Nonnamaker earned the Sport Touring II pole in the HRPworld.com No41 Acura Integra R. Nonnamaker's 1:47.358 lap at 75.448 mph was 1.439 seconds quicker than the second car in the class, the No5 Mazda Miata of DTM Engineering. Team Ford Focus had it best qualifying effort to date, taking third in the ST II class with its No88 entry.
All the pole-winning times will count as qualifying records, as it is the first time Grand-Am Cup has ran on Virginia International Speedway's North Course. |
