Turner Takes Mid-Ohio Speed Touring Car Win For BMW
Will Turner ended a three-year win drought, taking the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship win at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in his BMW 325i. Paul Bonaccorsi and Taz Harvey completed the top three.
Driving the No. 92 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs entry, Turner started second to the Audi A4 of Woody's Ice Polesitter Paul Lambert. Lambert led the first eight laps of the event but fell victim to a chaotic restart.
Harvey, driving the No. 8 NN Racing/Skunk2/CzechBeer.com Honda Civic Si made a jump from third into the lead going into turn two. Turner and Bonaccorsi followed suit, with Lambert falling behind with a deflating tyre, eventually pitting and finishing 23rd.
"I got a glimmer of hope between two cars and came out head. I was like 'wow, that worked,'" said Harvey. "Unfortunately, we had a running problem that hurt the car everywhere but on top end."
Following another caution to clear disabled cars, Harvey held off Turner until lap 18, when Turner got a run on the Honda to take the lead going into turn two. Bonaccorsi was by one lap later into second before the race's final caution came out for more cars in the gravel. Round Four ended under caution, with Turner averaging 62.361 mph.
"All I can say is 'finally,'" said Turner, who last won a World Challenge race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in 1999. "For the amount of time and effort we've put into this package, it should have happened earlier. The key to this weekend is that we were prepared. The reason I won today is because I had an outstanding handling car that was just easy to drive."
Driving the No. 40 TriPoint/Mazdaspeed Protégé, Bonaccorsi gave the Protégé its best SPEED Touring Car finish of second.
"We're very thrilled with the result," said Bonaccorsi. "We finally were able to work on the car's handling and setup rather than just struggling to make the car run [after the 2001 developmental season]. I really like this track and have had a lot of luck here."
Mike Fitzgerald finished fourth in his Lexus IS 300, followed by Shauna Marinus in a Mazdaspeed Protégé.
Point leader Pierre Kleinubing could only muster eighth but maintained his point lead, now over Harvey, 110 to 93. Peter Cunningham remains third, and earned the B&M Holeshot Award for advancing 12 spots on the first lap from his 47th starting position. He finished the race in 13th.
