The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series released its latest point standings following last weekend's VIR Three-Hour Race at Virginia International Raceway. The series' first of two visits to the track this season brought about lots of movement in the standings, including new team and driver leaders in two of the four classes.
Doncaster Racing and Powell Motorsports have been in battle for the Grand Sport I lead, and with the series half-way through its 10-race schedule, Doncaster Racing and its drivers Scott Maxwell and David Empringham, both of Toronto, have taken the lead in the class standings. After experiencing engine trouble at VIR and being passed by Doncaster Racing in the closing laps of the Watkins Glen race, Powell Motorsports drivers Doug Goad and Devon Powell have dropped to second, trailing their rivals by six points.
Max Q Motorsports and its drivers, Emil Assentato and Nick Longhi, continue to lead in the Grand Sport II team and driver standings. The biggest change occurred between second and third. After earning its second win of the season at VIR, Shreiner Racing moved into second, pushing SpeedSource down a place to third. Shreiner's win caused a switch in the driver standings as well, with SpeedSource's Sylvain Tremblay and John Strum moving down a position to third, now trailing Shreiner drivers Jeff Lapcevich and John Shreiner by four points.
Villaconn International continues to hold onto first in the Sport Touring I team standings. After earning its second win of the season, King Motorsports moved from fifth place to second, knocking the Team Lexus No2 entry from second to fourth place. Villaconn driver Beau Buisson, of the No34 BMW, continues to hold first place in the driver standings, while Team Lexus' Jean-Francois Dumoulin trails him by three points in second. Dumoulin's teammate in the No2 Lexus, Ian James, moved up two positions to third.
HRPworld.com's No41 entry earned its first Sports Touring II win of the season, knocking Bill Fenton Motorsports out of the top position for the first time this year. The victory moved HRPworld.com drivers Wayne and Will Nonnamaker into first place in the ST II driver standings, while Bill Fenton Motorsports' Bob Beede dropped to second, trailing the brothers by three points.
The leads in the manufacturer standings remained the same with the exception of the GS I class where Porsche took the lead from Chevy. Porsche also increased its GS II standing from third to second place, bumping BMW down a position. However, BMW maintained its top spot in the ST I class. The ST I second and third positions flipped with Acura now leading Lexus. Acura closed the gap on first, trailing BMW by only four points. Acura also maintained its lead in the ST II standings and increased its lead over Mazda from 12 to 21 points.
Grand-Am Cup Driver Point Standings
The Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series awards points to drivers based upon their finish in their respective class. Although drivers may race in more than one class during a race, they are only awarded points in the first car they drive. Only drivers holding valid Grand American Road Racing Association memberships are awarded points. The driver points reflect the top-20 drivers in each class after the fifth race of the season.
