Kristensen Jumps On Top Of Red-hot ALMS Points Battle As Series Heads To Road America
With consecutive second-place finishes, Tom Kristensen of Denmark has jumped atop the driver championship battle in the
American Le Mans Series as the sports car racing series heads into this Sunday’s event at Road America.
The Danish driver, who recently won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the fourth time in his career and third consecutive, hopes to celebrate his 35th birthday in style on Sunday by winning the American Le Mans Series debut event at Road America.
Kristensen, driver for Audi Sport North America, finished second with co-driver Rinaldo Capello in this past weekend’s event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It marked the second consecutive race in which Kristensen had finished second in an ALMS event. His finish, coupled with the bad racing luck experienced by previous leader Johnny Herbert, put the Dane atop the standings of three rounds of the 10-race series.
Kristensen has accumulated 66 points in the LMP 900 (Prototype) class to lead Herbert by only two heading into Sunday’s Road America 500. Herbert is in a tie with Rinaldo Capello for the second position. Frank Biela and defending ALMS champion Emanuele Pirro are tied for fourth with 59 points following their win at Mid-Ohio.
Despite being one of the fastest drivers and top performers on the series, Kristensen is mired in a bit of a personal slump. His car has been in the lead in eight consecutive ALMS races without winning, dating back to his last series win in July of 2001 at Sears Point Raceway. His record on the series includes four wins, with two coming in the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring.
Other class point leaders in the ALMS did not change at Mid-Ohio. Jon Field of Dublin, Ohio, leads the LMP 675 class, while Ron Fellows of Canada, who won at Mid-Ohio, leads the GTS class driver standings. Sascha Maassen of Germany heads the GT class standings. |
