Leitzinger Quickest In Wednesday Practice
Dyson Racing Team posted the quickest time during the final Rolex Sports Car Series practice for Thursday's Jani-King Paul Revere 250. With Butch Leitzinger behind the wheel, the No20 Ford-powered Riley & Scott posted a time of 1:42.967 at 124.467 mph. Running in its first practice session of the weekend, Dyson's No16 Ford was hot on its sister car's heels, posting a time of 1:42.987 with Englishman James Weaver at the controls. Jack Baldwin earned the third fastest time during the session in Robinson Racing's Judd-powered Riley & Scott with a 1:44.068 lap.
NASCAR driver Jerry Nadeau's first time in the Rand Racing No7 Nissan-powered Lola was a success, as he recorded the fastest SportsRacing Prototype II lap of the session with his 1:51.031 lap. The SRPII pole winner, Rand's No8 Nissan, clocked in right behind its team car with its 1:51.164 lap. Nic Jonsson was able to get the car's quick lap in early in the 90-minute practice session before he was involved in a collision with another car the track, causing Jonsson's car to hit the wall in NASCAR turn four. Although the damage was too severe for the car to continue the practice session, the team reports it should be ready to race Thursday night.
Lou Gigliotti, driver of the LG Motorsports Corvette, posted the fastest time in the American GT class. Gigliotti clocked a 1:51.235 lap, only 0.204 seconds behind the quickest SRPII time posted by Nadeau. Turning the second-fastest lap in the class was the Morgan Dollar Motorsports Corvette. Rob Morgan clocked a 1:52.616 lap in the Corvette.
In the GT class, the Scuderia Ferrari of Washington No33 Ferrari 360GT recorded the fastest time with its 1:56.596 lap. The class polesitter for Thursday's race, Joao Barbosa in Perspective Racing's Mosler MT900 R, had the second-quickest time with its 1:57.802 lap.
Jack Lewis Enterprises' No72 Porsche GT3 Cup was the only GTS car to take to the track for the final practice session. The Porsche posted a 2:03.034 lap. The pole-winning Saleen of Park Place Racing opted to skip the practice session in order to save the car.
The Jani-King Paul Revere 250 will begin following NASCAR Winston Bud Pole Qualifying for Saturday's Pepsi 400. The race is tentatively slated to start at 11:15 p.m. after Daytona International Speedway's Fourth of July fireworks display.
Driver Quotes...
Jerry Nadeau, driver of the No7 Nissan-powered Lola of Rand Racing/Risi Competizione (quickest in SRPII class during practice) "I did a lot of road racing years ago, and this is just a great time. I'm glad I was able to do this for Rand/Risi Motorsports with Anthony [Lazzaro]. I'm sure we are going to have a blast tomorrow night.
"I would love to do the 24 hours. That's why I'm here actually. If I can get a shot to do that, that would be a great time. It was a blast. I had a good time. I wish I had more laps, but I think overall it was a lot fun. It wasn't bad [getting used to it]. I've done a lot of Barber Dodge. Open-wheel cars are very similar. It was just a lot of fun. I had a good time." |
