Orbit Racing Takes 5th and 6th in Class at Road America
Orbit Racing earned fifth and sixth in the GT class at the American Le Mans Series’ Road America 500, after running as high as third in class during the 500-mile enduro.
Starting from ninth in the field of GT cars, the No42 Orbit Racing Porsche 911GT3RS made an impressive charge up through the class, finishing fifth in class, and 14th overall.
Gary Schultheis, Tony Kester and John Lloyd shared the driving duties in the No42 car. Schultheis took the first stint, followed by Kester and then Lloyd. The trio steadily worked their way through the field for their fifth place finish.
“We had a problem about halfway through the race,” said Kester. “Somebody decided they didn’t like getting passed and they turned into me- they were on the outside. We blew a tyre and it cost us two laps. Fifth is a great finish and everyone did a real good job.”
Lloyd was excited about his debut with Orbit Racing. “We’re very pleased with the result. We worked our way up and had some good yellow cautions to help us. I’m happy to be with the ALMS and I love Elkhart Lake.”
Leo Hindery and Peter Baron shared the No43 Orbit Racing Porsche. Baron started the race and ran a double-stint before handing over to Hindery. The car ran as high as third in class before unfortunate timing of caution periods presented a setback for the pair. Toward the end of the race, the engine lost a piston in a cylinder while the car was running in fifth. They finished fifteenth overall and sixth in class.
“We raced individually and as a team better than we’ve done in a long time,” commented Hindery. “The yellow flags just went against us. We just can’t seem to catch a break. We were running real high and ended up sixth, which at the start of the year we’d have taken, but right now it’s a little disappointing.”
“We started off really good, then we just got some unfortunate yellows where the leader literally got between us and the car running right in front of us,” added Baron. “We lost two laps that way. Right at the end we lost a piston in one of the cylinders with two laps to go. We’re getting there. We’re showing improvement every race. We’re learning a lot and sooner or later we’ll get some good luck and things will go our way.” |
