First Crawford SSC2K Test |
At Carolina Motor Sports Park |

For a little over two years now, Max Crawford has been working on bringing
his vision of a proper prototype to life. And now, his baby is born and
screaming it's head off! Crawford, owner of Crawford Composites, and a
veteran of the racing scene, took his new creation, the Andy Scriven designed
Crawford SSC2K, to the track and - like any proud parent who witnessed a new
birth- he commented, "We are over the moon!"
Chassis #1, owned by Fredy Lienhard's Lista Racing, and run by Kevin Doran,
rolled out onto the Carolina Motor Sports Park track in South Carolina this
week, and the results were very encouraging. "We are absolutely tickled to
death! We didn't have all the aerodynamic pieces on the car and it still
gave us fantastic results." Andy Wallace and Elliott Forbes Robinson were on
hand to drive the new baby and they told Max the car was better out of the
box than other cars they have driven that had already been through extensive
development.
The car ran on Yokohama tires and with a Judd engine. The chassis has been
designed to accept several different engines but the Judd has the inside line
for Lista racing. While other teams have expressed an interest, no other buyers have written a check yet. But Crawford is very encouraged by what the car has done in only its first trial run. And more testing is to follow. "We have tests coming
up at Virginia International and at Homestead. We have a pretty significant
program set."
A time consuming effort, the Crawfords even had to amend their Thanksgiving
plans to complete the testing. But Max doesn't seem to mind having missed
some turkey and stuffing. "I think we all felt some reservations, having
spent so long working to get this where we wanted it to be. You know, you ask
yourself, 'What have we built?' but after testing, we are VERY pleased!"
Kevin Doran commented in an earlier interview that the team was setting its
sights on debuting the Crawford SSC2K at the 2001 Rolex 24 hours at Daytona.
With his guidance and Crawford's parental instincts working in combination,
one has to wonder just how dynamic a car this new baby will be. |
