Shedden Secures Runners-Up Spot After Winning Points Appeal
Edinburgh racing driver Gordon Shedden has secured the runners-up spot in the 2003 Holiday Inn SEAT Cupra Championship after winning an appeal he’d lodged against the half points that had been awarded at the shortened race at Oulton Park.
After delays during the day, the 11 lap race had already been reduced to eight laps before round six of the SEAT Cupra Championship started almost two hours late. Just four laps were completed before the Oulton Park 18.30 curfew came into force, bringing the race to a premature end with Gordon taking the chequered flag. The Championship Stewards awarded half points for the shortened race, following which Gordon upheld his right to appeal – and following this appeal full Championship points for round six have been awarded.
The additional 8.5 points awarded to Gordon promotes the 23-year old Scottish Sun backed Leon Cupra R driver from 3rd to 2nd in the final Championship standings. Stefan Hodgetts, who failed to start the shortened race owing to a big accident in the first race at Oulton Park, slips from 2nd to 3rd. All other Championship positions remain unchanged.
Gordon said: “It wasn’t my fault the race at Oulton Park was cut short and in my view I won it fair and square, so I have always believed that awarding full Championship points was the correct thing to do.”
Having never been lower than 3rd in the SEAT Cupra Championship standings all season and recording six podium results during the year, including his race win at Oulton Park, Gordon may well return to the SEAT Cupra Championship next year with the aim of going one better and winning the title.
“I’d certainly like to continue to race saloon cars, and one of the options I’m looking into at the moment is to do the SEAT Cupra Championship again,” reveals Gordon. “It’s a good series and I have unfinished business there!”
