Robin Smith and his team thoroughly deserved their sixth in class at Kyalami – after nearly everything went wrong in the build up to the race. The ECU failed on Thursday, so a team member was sent back to the UK with it overnight on Thursday, returning with the revitalised unit on Saturday morning.
Tim Mullen had by then decided not to drive, so Dan Schryvers was first out, but a throttle problem saw him back it into the wall, damaging the rear wing and the back end (photo). He finally set a Qualifying time without a rear wing, but a long slog by the Simpson mechanics saw the car fettled for raceday and passed by the scrutineers. Schryvers and Smith finished several laps down, but at least they made the flag.
21 000 spectators on Saturday and 32 000 on Sunday showed the locals’ enthusiasm for international motorsport – but one local allegedly couldn’t keep his hands off Sam Smith’s passport in his hotel room, so the SRWC press officer (and SCW contributor) spent an extra day in South Africa. |
