Kleinubing Paces Speed Touring Car Practice At Road Atlanta
Pierre Kleinubing, of Brazil, topped SCCA Speed World Challenge Touring Car practice Wednesday at Road Atlanta. Jeff Altenburg and Bill Auberlen completed the top three.
On a cool, sun drenched day in Northern Georgia, the weather conditions definitely contributed to some very fast practice times. Twelve drivers recorded times faster than the Road Atlanta Speed Touring Car qualifying record of 1:39.004 for the 12-turn, 2.54-mile circuit. Leading the way was Kleinubing, pilot of the No. 42 RealTime Racing Acura RSX-S, who set a blistering fast lap of 1:37.882 (93.418 mph) in the morning session.
“The track conditions and the weather were good,” Kleinbuing said about the fast lap times. “It was a pretty good session. I think the biggest thing (we have going) is that we have a better motor package this weekend. We have a good chassis and our team made a really wise decision on the tires this morning, which paid off.”
Altenburg, driving the No. 40 TriPoint Mazdaspeed Mazda Protégé ES, had the second quickest combined time for both practices sessions. Altenburg recorded his fastest lap in the morning session with a 1:38.204 (93.112 mph).
Auberlen, who clinched the Speed Touring Car Drivers’ Championship in Round Eight, turned the third fastest time of 1:38.469 (92.861 mph) in his No. 93 Turner Motorsports/ H & R Springs BMW 325i.
Chuck Hemmingson was fourth quickest and Peter Cunningham was fifth.
