Goad, Powell To Race Crawford Daytona Prototype In 2004
Doug Goad and Max Crawford announced today the acquisition of the third Daytona Prototype Crawford chassis under construction for the Powell Motorsport team to race in the 2004 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
The move into the Rolex Series premier class will be a big jump for the team, which has scored four street stock championships in the last seven years.
"The opportunity to get into the top echelon of sports car racing at a time of rebuilding may prove a concern to some. It's a big step forward. To do it, I have to say that I believe in Grand American's vision for the future of sports car racing," remarked car owner Goad, who will share driving duties in the Crawford with his current Grand-Am Cup co-driver, Devon Powell.
"I also think that Max Crawford has a great race car. Powell Motorsport is the right team; John Powell gave me my first ride in a street stock Corvette in 1985, when I was just starting out in racing. Now it is my turn to look at the future and make an investment. This future includes racing with a very talented young driver like Devon Powell, and with the professional, experienced Powell team members.
"So once you determine that the right pieces are in place and the sanctioning body steadfastly holds to it’s vision for the future of the investment, the concern diminishes. I am really excited as this is the direction I have envisioned for myself and the team for the past couple of years, and now we have the opportunity to execute our vision," continued Goad.
Equally excited is Max Crawford, whose Crawford Race Cars will construct the DP03 for Goad and the Powell Motorsports team.
"I am pleased to have a professional race team with competitive race drivers move up into the Daytona Prototype class with our car. It makes a huge difference," commented Crawford. "Our company’s whole philosophy is to design and manufacture the very best car. Powell Motorsport, with drivers Doug Goad and Devon Powell, bring that same attitude to the racetrack - the aim to be number one."
A Chevrolet engine will power the Powell Motorsports No. 11 Crawford Daytona Prototype. The engines, based on the Chevrolet LS6 aluminium V-8, will be prepared by Wheel to Wheel Powertrain. Wheel to Wheel has built championship-winning LS1/6 Chevrolet engines for the Powell Motorsports Firebirds and Corvettes since 1998.
The Crawford DP03 is built with push-rod suspension, an Xtrac gearbox and an aluminium honeycomb chassis surrounding the mandated Daytona Prototype tube frame centre section.
"It was difficult figuring out what car to enter in the Rolex Series. Our heart is with Corvette," said team leader Powell "In Daytona Prototypes, Dave Klym and FABCAR have an excellent race car and a proven track record. Kevin Doran has been extremely helpful to us. Doug and Devon both drove the Doran and thought it was really a great car."
Powell said that the final the choice was made based both on the Crawford car itself, and Max Crawford the man.
"Max is prepared to invest alongside the team with technology and vehicle development. In Grand American Road Racing Daytona Prototypes, we will be racing against premier teams like Brumos, Doran-Lista, Bell, Speedsource, and now Ganassi," explained Powell. "Well, as a team we have only one bullet. Max supplies the bullet. Doug Goad has pulled the trigger."
Crawford Race Cars expects to have the Powell Motorsports No.11 Daytona Prototype ready at the end of November. Crawford will be testing both chassis No. 1 and No. 2 in mid-November. Chevrolet engines will power all of the Crawford Daytona Prototypes currently under construction.
