Michael Lauer is the owner of this wonderful machine, chassis #05 which competed at Le Mans in 1991 in the hands of Michael Schumacher, Fritz Kreutzpointner and Karl Wendlinger.
The car lost its nose at Daytona’s HSR meeting, which is exactly the sort of incident that the car suffered during the 1991 Le Mans event. Wendlinger spun the car into the tyres at the Dunlop Bridge, #31 then having several changes of nose during the balance of the 24 hours, finally coming home fifth.
Schlesser, Mass and Alain Ferte had looked the likely winners until their car famously overheated and handed victory to the Herbert, Weidler and Gachot Mazda. The young Germans in #31 showed that they had a lot to learn as regards winning Le Mans, but they were consistently the fastest crew on the track. They gave their car some awful stick for 24 hours, but it was the only C11 to finish. |
