Grand American Reports On Daytona Prototypes Engine Inspections
Grand American Road Racing Association conducted thorough Daytona Prototypes engine inspections following the Grand American Champions Weekend presented by Brumos Porsche at Daytona International Speedway last month.
The top-finishing engine from each manufacturer was impounded following the final race and transported to Mooresville, for testing and inspection.
Dyno testing was performed on the power plants at Pro Motor Engineering before they were taken to the NASCAR Tech Centre, where each engine was disassembled for a detailed inspection.
"This process allows us to closely monitor the adjustments made to the engines over the season. From this inspection, we gathered enough information to make minor modifications for the coming season that will maintain parity between the different engine types and sizes," explained Director of Competition Mark Raffauf.
"Since 2003 was the first season for the Daytona Prototypes, we anticipated there would be improvements from the original engine certification, and we plan to do this type of inspection on a regular basis to continue the parity that the Daytona Prototypes class is based upon," added Raffauf.
Grand American will make three adjustments to its Daytona Prototype engine specifications for the 2004 season. The GM LS6 V-8 two-valve push rod engine had its RPM reduced by 500 to 6,500 RPM, and the RPM in the Ford 5.0 Modular 4-valve V-8 engine has been reduced by 300 to 6,900 RPM. The BMW M5 V-8 engine had its restrictor size increased from 1.225 inches to 1.875 inches.
Grand American made no changes to its specifications for the Toyota TRD V-8 engine and Porsche 3.6 litre GT3R Flat 6 engine.
The Daytona Prototypes will participate in test sessions hosted by Homestead-Miami Speedway on December 19-20. Race fans will be granted free access to the fourth-floor club level to watch the testing.
