Three Porsche Factory Drivers Join The Racer's Group for Rolex 24 At Daytona
Team Aims for Third-Straight Rolex 24 GT Win
The Racer's Group, overall winners of the 2003 Rolex 24 At Daytona, announced its 2004 Rolex 24 driver line-up for the No. 66 Monster Cable Porsche GT3 RS. The team will field three Porsches in the historic sports car race, with the driver line-ups for the Nos. 67 and 68 cars to be announced later this week.
Team owner Kevin Buckler will lead his team into the fray again, aiming for his third-consecutive Daytona win, with Porsche factory drivers Jörg Bergmeister, Timo Bernhard and Patrick Long sharing driving duties. Buckler, Bergmeister and Bernhard will team up for the third-straight year in the endurance classic and will be joined by American Patrick Long, who will be making his Rolex Series debut.
"I'm thrilled to be going back to Daytona with this group of guys," said Kevin Buckler, two-time GT winner at Daytona. "Monster Cable has made it possible again for us to contest this race, and the Porsche factory gives us a great chance at winning again with Jörg, Timo and Patrick. I feel that our team is the best prepared for this race. We've demonstrated success here before, and we plan to put our heads down and work hard to get ready for this year's race.
"I'm honoured to have the three Porsche factory drivers sharing the car with me, and I'm looking forward to helping Patrick get acclimated to the team and the circuit. We ran 24 hours without an incident last year on our Dunlop tyres which is quite a feat, and we're happy to be on Dunlops again this year," he continued.
In 2003, The Racer's Group stunned the racing world with a dominating overall win. The team's win in a GT car was the first time in 27 years that a car from the "slowest" class of cars won overall, and gave the team an added measure of prestige in the endurance-racing world.
The car that won the race, a 2003 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, was immediately retired and purchased by Noel Lee, founder and President of Monster Cable, the team's biggest supporter. The car was featured in Daytona USA, the museum that chronicles the history of Daytona International Speedway, and has made appearances across the globe since the historic win. This week, the No. 66 car will occupy a place in Porsche's display booth at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, at the North American launch of the new Carrera GT.
In addition to its overall win at the 2003 Rolex 24 At Daytona, The Racer's Group was also the GT winners of the 40th Anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2002.
